College students and young Americans have traditionally embraced new technologies before older generations, but the majority of consumers between the ages of 18 to 25 prefer in-store shopping to ecommerce sites.
According to a recent survey by LIM College in New York, 68 percent of young consumers favor in-store buying because of the ability to touch and test products before completing a purchase. However, it's still essential for retailers to implement a user-friendly ecommerce site, as 66 percent of shoppers in the 18-to-25 age range research goods and compare product prices online. Meanwhile, 23 percent of those consumers shop on a smartphone or tablet.
The survey also revealed the impact of social media on young shoppers' buying habits. A majority of respondents said they will "like" a brand's Facebook page, but 88 percent said they are not yet interested in shopping via social networks like Facebook and Twitter.
