The online shopping car abandonment rate has increased each of the previous three years, and some experts say an even greater portion of internet consumers will withdraw from checkouts this year.

According to a Business 2 Community report, the shopping cart abandonment rate reached a record-high 72 percent in 2011, while the Wednesday before Thanksgiving had the highest single-day abandonment rate at 89.2 percent.

The source attributed the rise of checkout withdrawals to the discount-only shopping behavior of present-day consumers. Citing a recent survey, the report said 47 percent of online shoppers are usually only interested in buying discounted products, and 73 percent of consumers acknowledge free shipping as a vital buying factor.

Despite retailers efforts to increase checkout speeds, improve credit card processing security and design user-friendly ecommerce sites, the source expects the cart abandonment to ascend further this year as consumer become better at discovering online discounts across numerous retail websites.
